A Brandon man died after he had a medical issue early Wednesday morning while driving and crashed into a steel cable barrier on Interstate 75, the Florida Highway Patrol said in a press release.

The crash happened at 12:18 a.m. on Interstate 75 near mile marker 228.

According to the release, a 53-year-old man from Brandon was driving in his pickup truck north on I-75, approaching a right turn at mile marker 228.

Investigators believe the man had a medical episode while trying to make the turn. The man's truck then traveled off the road, into the grass median, and crashed into a steel cable barrier, the release said.

The man was taken to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

The crash is still under investigation.

This is the second crash FHP has investigated in Manatee County in 11 days that may be linked to a possible medical emergency.

On April 29, troopers investigated the fatal crash in which a 54-year-old man from Parrish was believed to have had a medical issue while driving and crashed into a guardrail along Whitfield Avenue.
